Instructions for the English Interactive Notebook

The Interactive Notebook is a project that we will work on four days a week in class. It is one of the most important grades for each quarter, so it is important to follow the instructions on this page carefully.

Every student will need a wide ruled spiral notebook with at least 50 pages in it. You will need to get a new notebook for each quarter. Do not take the pages out of this notebook to use for other assignments or you will run out of pages before the end of the quarter.

There are five types of assignments that we will be putting in these notebooks at the start of class every Monday through Thursday. Here is a list of what you can expect to be putting in the notebook on any given day:

    1) We will work on a list of 10 vocabulary words every Monday. You will need to spend the first ten to fifteen minutes of class every Monday looking up the definitions for these words. To earn a point for these pages, you will need all ten definitions.

    2) We will write journal topics based on the themes of the literature that we are reading in class. Each journal must be written to the bottom of the page to earn a point.

    3) We will write sentences for our vocabulary words for the week. You must have 10 sentences to get credit for these pages.

    4) We will answer questions from the textbook about the literature that we are reading. All questions must be answered and written in complete sentences to earn a point for the page.

    5) We will cut and paste parts of worksheets into the notebook.

Every page of the notebook is worth one point. The page must be complete to earn that point (incomplete pages will not earn any points). Every page must be written in blue or black in and have the proper heading (name, date, class period, page #). Start every page on the right side. You may continue to the back side if you need more room.

We spend 10-15 minutes in class on Monday through Thursday working on these notebooks. Any entry that is not completed in class can be completed at home and students are responsible to complete any entry that they miss when they are absent. We will grade these notebooks twice throughout each quarter.

Hopefully this explains the journal notebook and will help you to check on the notebook during the quarter.
